At this time of year why do my arborvitaes seem like they are turning brown and dying?
All evergreens go through a period of needle shed. This normally happens in the fall. Previous years needles are dying and turning brown. This is normal and does not indicate a problem if the needles on the end of the branches remain green.
How can I prevent my lawn from being eaten by mice and voles during the winter?
Many of you may have been shocked in the spring when the snow melted and you found lanes of grass destroyed by these animals over the winter. The best way to prevent this damage is to mow your lawn short before the first snow. This will discourage these pests from using your lawn as a winter refuge.
Can my lawn be planted at this time of year?
The planting of a successful lawn is very dependent upon the weather. It is generally agreed that the best times for planting lawns in our latitude is during the months of April and September. October is very risky for planting a lawn. If the weather is warm enough to allow for germination and the warmth lasts long enough for the seedlings to establish themselves, then your lawn will do well. However, if the seedlings do germinate and then freeze before establishment, then your lawn will be very thin in the spring. It may be better to wait until November and do a dormant seeding. This means that the seed bed is prepared, seed is spread, and germination occurs in the spring.
Should I wrap my fruit trees and young shade trees?
Wrapping of small diameter shade trees and fruit trees is good insurance against animal damage during the winter months. Rabbits and deer need food during the winter and will find it, maybe even in your front yard. In a matter of a few minutes a tree can be girdled and killed by a hungry animal. Installing a plastic or paper wrap on your young tree will prevent them from using your tree as a food source.
Is fall a good time to plant landscape plants and trees?
The answer to that question is an unqualified yes. Planting in the fall allows the plant to get the earliest start in the spring. We at Wolfraths are so sure of that fact, that we offer a 100% warranty on our plants, which are planted after September 1, through the whole winter and into the spring until you are sure that your plant is alive. After that there is a 60% warranty for the balance of two years.
